Beth Gordon is Melinda's mother and Jim's mother-in-law. She is one of the only known members of Melinda's family to not inherit the ability to see ghosts. It is not known why the ability "skipped" Beth. This fact was later proven false in the episode "Melinda's First Ghost" (Season 1, Episode 15) where Melinda and Beth have an argument about Melinda's friend, Sarah, from the past. Melinda finds out Beth is lying after Beth mistakenly quotes the ghost of Sarah; she thought Melinda has said it. Therefore is is proven that Beth can indeed see ghosts but has repressed her gift because she finds it a burden. Jim tells her at one point that his wife runs towards her truth/gift whereas Beth runs away from it.
